Internet Poker Fans Are Playing Politics at Party Conventions

Aug. 30 (Bloomberg) — U.S. poker players have anted up for another high-stakes game — lobbying.

Trying to overturn a 2006 U.S. ban on online poker, gamblers have started a lobbying group, established a political action committee, and promoted their effort to politicians by holding poker tournaments at the Republican and Democratic nominating conventions.

“Up until this point, the minority of the public that is anti-gambling has yelled louder,” professional poker player Andy Bloch said. “We’re trying to change that.”

The Poker Players Alliance, which claims 1 million members, has invited lawmakers and celebrities to a charity tournament Sept. 3 in Minneapolis, across the Mississippi River from St. Paul, where Republicans are meeting to formally nominate John McCain for president.

New gambling laws could raise the stakes for poker

Ask Karel Kruška to describe what it takes to be a good poker player, and he’ll tell you it has as much to do with personal temperament as it does with raw talent.

“Czech poker players are usually ambitious young guys,” said Kruška, chairman of Hot Springs Poker Club Teplice and a member of the executive council of the Czech Association of Poker Clubs. “Many of them have a gambling gene. Undoubtedly they are intelligent and playful [but] a certain degree of narcissism and extroversion is also common.”

With poker having surged in local popularity over the past two years — association officials estimate that 60,000 Czechs play poker, with roughly 1,000 organized into 19 official clubs across the country — many aficionados hope that steely confidence comes in handy when facing their latest challenge, one that’s considerably bigger than the game itself.
